Hope for Creation

Thank you to everyone who acted and prayed as part of Hope for Creation ahead of this year's climate talks in Durban, South Africa.

The talks ended with an agreement amongst all countries called the ‘Durban Platform'. This brought some minor progress towards the global action needed but not enough. Much more needs to happen to agree the ambitious action required to protect poor countries that are hit hardest.

The Durban talks were better than we feared but not as good as we need. They've kept the process alive and a global deal to cut emissions is very possible, but at the moment it won't take effect till 2020 which is later than required, so temperatures are likely to rise by 3 or 4 degrees.

During the talks the Hope for Creation political statement was presented to Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC - the body that runs the climate talks). She was very open to receiving the statement and said that we need a lot of prayer in this process!

Over 60 leaders of churches and organisations from over 20 countries had signed the statement as part of Hope for Creation.

Please continue to pray:

  • for more ambition from leaders so the door to keeping global warming below the danger-threshold remains open;
  • and for agreement soon on ways to deliver finance to help poor countries - who are hit hardest - respond.
