Derby Christians join to pray at 7:14 pm
1 Dec 2011
Around 50 Christians in Derby from a number of congregations joined together with at least 55 cities in 12 nations on 6 continents this evening, to pray.
At the start of Advent, this multi-city, simultaneous, public prayer event had no single organiser, but has gone viral both locally and globally with the help of social media including Facebook and Twitter. In the East Midlands Derby is joined by Nottingham and Leicester, and at least nine cities in other countries have said they would be joining in. There may well have been many unknown others taking part too.
The event started at 7:14 pm - symbolic of a Bible passage (2 Chronicles 7:14) which sums up why people are gathering:
"... if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
At a time when there is much social, economic, political and environmental turmoil in the nation and world, Christians believe that the only answer is to turn back towards Jesus. This gathering is just a glimpse of much united prayer that more and more people are joining together with in offering to God.
The Facebook page that is bringing the events together says: "All over the world, nations are shaking. Politically, economically, socially, environmentally. It's a time of great challenge and change. In the face of such need, we can often feel powerless, wondering what difference we can make. At times such as these, God calls his people to pray. This is such a time. This is such a call. ... The world is on the streets right now, rising up for change. It's time the Church was too, proclaiming Jesus Christ is Lord!"
The gathering, which happened by the clock-tower at the Spot in Derby, lasted about an hour.
