"Sometimes there are no words" - Prayer Spaces in Schools Update
4 Jan 2012One year on from the first "pilot" Prayer Space in a Scottish school, Auchinleck Academy hosted its second prayer space. Such was the impact of last year's experience, many of the pupils still refer to this very ordinary classroom as "the prayer room"!
Highlights from this year? One highlight was the involvement of those in our community. The space was very ably hosted by Elizabeth Conquer, who is the mum of three of our former pupils. Through involvement over the years with youth work in her church, Elizabeth knew many of the pupils already. Two of the other volunteers had grown up in the area some 30 years ago before moving away - but still had great insight into the particular challenges and issues facing our young people.
Elizabeth had this to say, "Once again, it was so moving to read some of the post-it prayers and requests - again, the overwhelming majority of them expressing love, gratitude, sorrow, and grief for family and friends.
"Why did you take my baby sister?"
"Will my mum ever forgive me and trust me again?"
"Look after my brother in Afghanistan please."
"Why did she have to die?"
Today I re-visited the room to look at the display on the wall. Pointing to that last post-it note, one of the girls said "I was there when she was murdered. I saw it happen."
Sometimes, there are no words. Just deep questions written on heart shaped post-it notes.
